POSITION TITLE:  Director, Diaconal Ministry & Formation


DEPARTMENT: Diaconal Ministry & Formation

REPORTS TO:   The Ordinary of the Diocese or His Delegate

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Formation Director(s), Administrative Assistant, Permanent Deacons of the Diocese, and Committee Heads of Various Committees





REQUIRED:  A Permanent Deacon is preferred.Undergraduate Degree. Five years experience in Leadership role in a Parish, Diocese, Catholic College/University, or Religious Order. Must have a thorough  understanding of   contemporary theology of the Catholic Church,  the Sacraments and the Diaconate.

DESIRED:  Masters Degree or Certification (preferably in theology, biblical or pastoral studies) or equivalent. Development and management experience in formation work in the Church. Demonstrated  interpersonal skills, strong organizational and development skills,  and vocational discernment and spiritual leadership skills for the benefit of the Formation and Diaconate Community. Fluency in a secondary language would be helpful.

  • Director of the Office of Permanent Diaconate
  • Preparation and Supervision of Annual Budget
  • Preparation of Annual Statistical Reports
  • Supervision of Files on Diaconate, Deacons, and Aspirants/Candidates
  • Revision and Implementation of Diocesan Policy for Permanent Deacons
  • Develop Annual Calendar for the Permanent Diaconate
  • In collaboration with the Director of Formation and creating a Procedural Manual for Diaconate Formation Process (Online and Paper Formats)

 Admissions Program (goal is new formation classes every 2 to 3 years)

  • Collaborate with others in establishing the criteria and process for admission to Formation.


  • Coordinate all Rites and Ordinations with Formation Director and the Director of Worship for the Diocese of Dallas
  • Insure all Documents, and processes needed for Ordination are properly completed

Call and Facilitate/Preside at Meetings including: 

  • Deacon Advisory Council
  • Deacon Personnel Board
  • Continuing Education Committee
  • As appropriate join Admissions & Scrutinies Committee

Public Relations

  • Develop and Strengthen the Identity, Mission, and Vision of the Permanent Diaconate in the Diocese of Dallas
  • Establish a working rapport with other Diocesan Departments
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Catholic Charities, Saint Vincent De Paul, the University of Dallas and other organizations including Ecumenical and Interfaith that involve the Diaconate
  • Maintain Active Membership and Participation in (NADD) National Association of Deacon Directors’ Meetings, Conferences and Conventions
  • Make or Arrange for Presentations on the Permanent Diaconate to Various Groups
  • Submit announcements to the Clergy Newsletter.
  • Develop a Diaconate Newsletter to be Published Quarterly.
  • Update and maintain the Diaconate page(s) on the Diocesan website


  • Maintain Contact with Permanent Deacons and Wives including retired and wives of deceased deacons
  • Initial point of contact for ministry, policy or personal issues impacting ministry
  • Provide opportunities for continued Human, Spiritual, Intellectual and Pastoral growth
  • Facilitate Diaconal Charity ministries
  • Oversee Annual Deacon Congress with Hosting Deanery(s)
    • Oversee Annual Continuing Education Program with Continuing Education Committee
    • Plan and Attend Annual Deacon/Wife Retreat and Recollection Events
    • Set Up Date(s) for local Ordinary’s Meetings with Permanent Deacons at least on an Annual or Bi-Annual Basis
    • Maintain Communication with Pastors where Permanent Deacons Serve
    • Respond to Requests for Deacons needed at Diocesan Liturgies
    • Provide Criteria and Process for Ministry Review of Permanent Deacons including annual ministry surveys
