The Position:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno is recruiting for a seasoned Chief Financial Officer to administer the financial, fiscal, and business functions of the Diocese of Fresno (Diocese).  The incumbent, working under the administrative and policy direction of the Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, and pursuant to the Code of Canon Law, Canon 494, is responsible for the effective stewardship of financial and fiscal resources in support of the mission and goals of the Diocese.  Specific job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning, directing, and administering the financial/fiscal/business management systems/functions of the Diocese.  (For a list of additional job duties and responsibilities and required knowledge, skills, and abilities, please refer to the official Chief Financial Officer classification/job description.)

Given the sensitive nature of this position and the relationship to the Bishop and Vicar General, the following traits and characteristics assume paramount importance: strong pastoral allegiance, active loyalty, and close working relationship with the Bishop and Vicar General; strong administrative financial/fiscal/business acumen; extensive experience overseeing corporate operations; strong governing and administrative skills, abilities, and knowledge; effective oral and written communication skills and abilities; ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships at all Diocesan levels, with parish pastors/administrators, other religious of the diocese, office/department heads, consultative bodies/councils, and the public.  In addition, the following characteristics are also vital to carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position: a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgment; initiative; and the ability to exercise effective judgment and display discretion under spiritual and policy/administrative direction, and in concert with the pastoral direction of the Bishop.  Furthermore, the Chief Financial Officer must be a practicing Catholic in good standing who is living within the teachings of the Catholic Church as determined by the Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, or his designee.

Due to the financial and operational assets entrusted to the Chief Financial Officer, the incumbent has a fiduciary role and obligation to the Bishop and his corporations.  The specific fiduciary duties and responsibilities include obedience, loyalty, care, good faith & fair dealing, and disclosure.  In addition, as a member of the Bishop’s administrative team, the Chief Financial Officer assists the Bishop administer and direct the affairs of the Diocese in the most orderly, efficient, and cost effective manner, and in concert with the Bishop’s pastoral, governing, and administrative direction.

“Ministry” Exemption:

The job duties and responsibilities associated with this position are executed pursuant to and consistent with the teachings, doctrines, tenants, values, disciplines, customs, and practices of the Catholic Church.  Consequently, this position is considered a Catholic faith “minister” for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:       Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a closely related field; advanced degree in business administration, finance, or accounting preferred.

Experience:      Minimum of five (5) years of full-time paid administrative/executive level work experience in finance and/or accounting preferably working for the Catholic Church, or working for other Christian faith denominations or non-profit organizations.  (Work experience should include partnering/collaborating with senior staff; working with consultative bodies; supervision of subordinate department heads/managers; and accounting, investing, borrowing, and business law.  In addition, experience overseeing corporation-owned properties/real estate, facilities, cemeteries, employee benefits, insurance, risk management, and information technology is preferred.)


Certification:    Certified Diocesan Fiscal Manager (CDFM) credential preferred.

License:           Certified Public Accountant preferred.

California Class “C” Driver License

Other: Applicants must be practicing Catholics in good standing and living within the teachings of the Catholic Church as determined by the Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, or his designee.
